    Question about generations

I am using myself as the source, and I have a portion of my tree back to 8 generations. My question is if I have 8 generations....then why does the family sheet say 6 generations?

What family sheet? Where? Are you doing a report? A chart?

Can you post a picture or tell us exactly where you are in Reunion?

There are some charts that only go 4-5-6 generations. Additionally, many reports have a dialog that lets you choose how many generations. Have you tried to change it?

          Yes, helps tremendously:
A 6th Great Grandfather is, in fact, 8th generation. The word 'grandfather' signifies your father's father--hence 2 generations right there.

              Or your mother's father.

That pic helped us all, Shelbyw I see what you meant now. SGilbert & Blaise A. Darveaux already answered your original question, so I won't repeat.

But I will confess, I often forget to count myself as a generation

I always count myself as generation 1. That makes a 6 Great Grandfather generation 9.

Yes, that is correct, but a little bit of clarity is needed.

The chart of this ancestry line will show 9 generations in total. But if I asked you how many generations of your ancestors are shown, you, of course, would say 8 generations back.
