    Bringing in photos

I've imported a GEDCOM file from my Ancestry research. As I understand it, photos will not import as GEDCOM is a data file. They show up as Web Link. I'd like to import the photos. I've even tried to manually reinsert the jpg photos from my original files and I get the "?". Why can't I add the photos?

To get the photos to import to Reunion you need a 2 step process:

Get the Family Tree Maker software (I know it works with this) which costs money, or perhaps the free RootsMagic software can do this too - try it and see I guess...

Open the software, and connect it to your Ancestry account, and then link it to your Ancestry tree.

The software will then set about downloading your Ancestry tree to the family file on your computer. It will also download all of the linked images.

Then when that has finished doing all of its downloading, you can export a GEDCOM file out of that, including the media links, and then import that GEDCOM file into Reunion.

That will get the media links in to Reunion.

Thanks Roger. I plan to try that. Followup. Why can't I manually drag photos into that same new Reunion tree that I had brought via GEDCOM from Ancestry? They come with in a "camera/question mark" as I had shown above.

In FTM, all the media is in one huge file. One can drag photos from there to an individual's Reunion media window directly. Of course, it would be one at a time. So, which way to go depends on how many need to be done. Just another option to consider.

Where are you dragging the image from?

You can't drag them from a web browser into Reunion as the images are still on the website - the browser just lets you view them. You'd need to view them in the browser and then for each image, save that image to your computer, and then drag it from there.

I don't understand what you're saying here - if one uses Family Tree Maker as the intermediary to get the genealogy data and the images from Ancestry, then the GEDCOM export from Family Tree Maker would of course include the links between the media and the individuals that each media item is attached so, so importing the GEDCOM file in to Reunion would import the media links to the media now on your computer.

Roger.... I'm just offering another way to move photos.... not involving GEDCOMs. That's all.

I haven't purchased Family Tree Maker yet. In the meantime... I find that if I drag the photo straight from my computer file, it comes in with the question mark. If I bring it onto the desk top then drag onto a person in Reunion it comes in fine. Do I really need the extra step?
