Hitting ENTER key in Note field

    Hi all,
When I am entering comments in the Note field, sometimes pressing ENTER while typing moves me to a new line, and sometimes it acts like I clicked Done and brings me out of it.
What decides this, and is there a way to make this consistent? I would prefer it to always create a new line.
    Thanks

It depends where your active cursor is at the time you press RETURN. If the active cursor is in the note field, it will make a new line. If the active cursor is down in the source area (for example immediately after adding a source) then the RETURN will act like Done.

When adding a source (Command-R), I have my system set to automatically put the active cursor in the Detail field so pressing RETURN takes me out of Note field editing. I do not have an ENTER key on my keyboard so I cannot speak to what an ENTER key does.

Thanks for the reply. In my case, when either happens, my cursor is always in the note field, so it's not behaving like yours. It appears to be random. I'm typing a note, then hit RETURN and sometimes it acts like I clicked Done and closes the note.

I'm just testing it, and it indeed works randomly both ways.
I have both a RETURN key and an ENTER key, and both work interchangeably, but it is RETURN I use the most.

That is weird. The manual says that the Return key will start a new paragraph

and the Enter key is the same as pressing the Done key in the lower right.

If you have one key doing both behaviors, that is not expected.

Agreed - it's strange. I can go edit the same record twice and get both behaviours - with the RETURN key. I am able to duplicate it. It's been like this for years, over multiple versions of the software, but today it got to me. (I only use ENTER for entering numbers.)

Sounds to me like Blaise is using the standard Apple keyboard (no 10-key) and Andre a full keyboard (has 10-key). Andre's might be an Apple full board or other brand but if it is advertised as Mac compatible, I have been led to believe that all but the F keys row is standard in nature. In the early days of an MS Word version several years ago, there was a similar problem which was fixed in a software update. Perhaps Gregg can shed more light on this.

I'm not sure what a 10 key is, but mine is the full-size with numeric keypad, wireless Apple brand keyboard (older model).

I never noticed that my Enter key was supposed to act like I'd hit done - tested and works. It's my RETURN key that seems to occasionally do a "Done" also. Not a huge problem, but curious.

We older folks often call the numeric keypad a 10-key. Prior to wide use of personal computers, we had a typewriter for text and a 10-key for number crunching. Just two different names for the same thing. (The 10-key keyboard was the same as what you see at the numeric end of your full keyboard.) In most applications, the Return key and the Enter key do precisely the same thing; some apps assign the Enter key for a different action.
