Marking & Exporting has a quirk

I want to export a GEDCOM file with all descendants of a start person, including all their spouses and their parents, all as records. So, I go to the start person and MARK:

    • Unmark everyone first
    • Mark source couple
    • Mark spouses
    • Mark parents of spouses

That correctly marks all the records I want to export.

However, when I export, the only relevant option is to export marked people and their spouses. This results in other spouses of a descendant spouse being included in the export. I don't want those.

I tried skipping the Mark spouse and Mark parents of spouses and then exporting all marked with spouses + and their parents but the parents didn't come out as a record, just a mention on the spouse.

So, I'm confused by this. I need to export just the marked people.

Can anyone help explain how to do this... assuming there is a way.

If I'm following your logic correctly, your MARKING process is correct and working.

When you export, export only the marked persons (you've already marked everyone you want).

I duplicated your exercise and it seems to work for me.

If Kirk's idea works, great, then disregard what I wrote below. If it doesn't work, keep reading.

"This results in other spouses of a descendant spouse being included in the export. I don't want those."

So, in other words, spouses of descendant's spouses are being included in the export -- people who are neither a descendant or a spouse of a descendant. I avoid this problem by not including those people in my database (but I do record them in the notes field.) I also don't include parents of spouses of descendants, since they are not related to me, either by blood or marriage, but I put their names in a "Parents" fact field that I made.

Kirk, there is not a "Marked people" option to check, only a "Marked people and their spouses" option.

Mark, I would try this when marking:

Go to start person and MARK:
      Who: Descendants of.....

      • Unmark everyone first
      • Mark source couple
Do not click the Mark spouses, they will be included at export.
      • Mark parents of spouses

then export "Marked People and their spouses".

Logically it should export the marked descendants, their spouses, and spouses' parents. But NOT spouses of spouses.

      Good luck.

I can't export only the marked persons because the option for that automatically includes all spouses for marked persons. I'm not sure you have setup the test correctly as this problem happens every time I run.

Retested and this seems to work... my previous test didn't include parents as records but that does seem to work now if I select parents on export (it gets disabled on mark when not marking spouses). Thanks. This might be a solution.
