    Web publishing. Private.

Is there a way to publish the complete data on the web, to keep the private items invisible for the common visitor, but to allow selected people (e.g. close relatives) to see the private items via a password?

The only way that I can see to do that (but I am no expert) is to publish two different versions. One version that withholds all sensitive data and that is open to search crawlers; the other that includes all data and that is closed to crawlers and is password protected.

Perhaps people who publish using TNG have a better solution than this?

What you can and cannot do may be determined, somewhat, by laws where you publish.

Thanks Blaise, I had considered this solution of duplicating the database, but it takes over one hour to upload each version (21000 files and 212 MB). I was hoping to get a simpler way.

I can only wish mine took only an hour to upload. Last time I did it (about a year ago) it took 5 or 6 hours. I think my site is about 29,000 files, but the next one I do will be much larger because I've added many thousands more relatives.

This was my introduction to TNG in 2003 - I was trying to load 103,000 Reunion HTML files, over my local network to a web server in my basement - I think it was at that time a PowerMac 6100.

            That crashed my network.

TNG can easily achieve what you're looking for in terms of privacy and safety of data about living persons, and operates on the basis of upload a GEDCOM file to the TNG site.

But TNG is not for the faint of heart - if you are comfortable with FTP and running a web server it's not too bad, but if you ask "what is FTP" then it's probably not for you.
