Rebuilding thumbnails etc & Reunion Touch problems

My iMac (late 2015) has taken approx 25 mins in "Rebuilding Thumbnails" (and my settings are set to "Remove/Omit" large thumbnails for people also for sources) - is this correct or is my iMac getting too old.

At time of writing "gathering records" takes at least same amount of time and in so doing prevents Reunion from being used. I had to stop it so as to be able to use Reunion.

Another problem I've just encountered is the UK 1921 Census. I have gathered about 200 of the 1921 census records ( as screenshots), annotated them and attached them to the families named therein.

They show up in the media windows for the individuals on my iMac but, for some unknown reason none are appearing on either my iPad or iPhone in Reunion Touch - all i'm seeing is the file heading. Other records do show albeit they are blurred and un readable.

Anyone have suggestions on my problems?

    Alan

The speed in which these functoins are completed will depend on a few things...
    1. the size of your family file,
    2. the number of linked media files,
    3. the amount of free storage space,
    4. and the amount of available RAM on your Mac.

Try running the media repair feature in Reunion 13 on your iMac. This can be done by opening your family file and choosing Reunion -> Settings. Then, click on Media. Next, after verifying the storage locations for all of your linked media files is shown in the "...Search..." section of that panel. (If not, click the "+" under that section and use the window that opens to add it.) Next, click the button to "Repair Media Links..." and "Proceed." If any are broken, you will see a window saying so. In that window, click the button to see the "Media Usage Report." That report shows all broken links in red. Each item will show the name of the missing file and where it was last seen by Reunion. Your job will be to locate that item and move it into one of the storage locations specified in the Reunion->Settings/Media/"...Search..." section.

After this has been done, allow Drobpox or iCloud Drive to sync before opening your family file in ReunionTouch.

Are they blurred and unreadable on your Mac or in ReunionTouch?

      Hi Deb,

      Thank you for your help.

I have largely overcome the problem of the 1921 census records not appearing in Reunion touch. I deleted the f/file from from both iPad & iPhone and re-installed and the images now appear. (see below).

      To answer your queries;

      1. family file is; 897.8 mb

      2. number of linked media files; 68,195 items (does this sound correct?)

      3. free storage is; 1.2 TB

      4. amount of Ram; is 24GB

I have run the media repair function (I do this frequently) and no missing files found.

The images on my iMac are perfectly readable and in the .jpg format. But on my phone & iPad they are all blurry and might just as well not be there as you cannot read them.
The settings in Reunion for repairing thumbnails are set to "Remove/omit" for both large T/Nails in people/families and also for sources"

As a test, try change the quality of of those large thumbnails in the Reunion -> Settings / Media / Rebuild Thumbnails panel to Size: 800; Quality: OK. Then, click "Proceed." Afterward, allow time for the changes to sync to Dropbox or iCloud Drive. Then, try opening the family file.

Does that make them more readable?

Note: the number of linked media (68,195) is quite large. But, that does not say it is not correct.

In any case, if changing the quality for the linked media files is helpful, you may be able to take it up to Size: 1000 and Quality: Good.

Let me know how it works out for you.

          Hi Deb,

Rebuild Thumbnails panel to Size: 800; Quality: OK

Well I did as suggested and my f/file increased in size from 903.5gb to 5.1 GB and well over my Dropbox allowance of 3.76 GB. So i'm back to square one!!

Okay. My reason for suggesting not omitting the large thumbnails is due to the manual's statement about omitting large thumbnails...

"The main drawback of omitting large thumbnails is that images shared with ReunionTouch will not be "zoomable" on devices."

Go back to omitting them in the family file on the Mac. Then, after Dropbox finishes syncing, open the family file in ReunionTouch on each of your devices. If the family file does not update in ReunionTouch, Reset Sharing in the family file on your Mac. (To do this, open the family file and choose File -> Reset Sharing. Then, click Reset.)

It could take quite some time to load all of the images in ReunionTouch since there are so many of them.

Do you see the same results on both devices where the "small thumbnails" do not appear?

            Please let me know.

            Thanks
