Strathclyde Template - Sources & Citations

Hi ... can anyone advise me on how to set up the Strathclyde style for citations and source referencing ... it is like Harvard style rather than Shown Mills. Reunion 14, iMac M4.

After taking a look at the Strathclyde style on-line guide, I am reasonably convinced that Reunion is not set up to create citations via this method.

And to make it possible. it would mean that Leister, Inc. would have to make a complete software re-write. That would be prohibitively expensive and would likely be used by a tiny number of Reunion users if it were to be made available.

This is just a thought... I've begun using a log as a place to create and store templates for different types of sources and citations - in my case, I use ESM/EE's templates as my guide. (I put all my templates in a single log, but one could as easily use one log per template to keep them all visible in the logs list.)

When adding a new source, I paste the appropriate template from the log into the source's free-form text box and replace the boilerplate with the details specific to the new source. It's some work up front to create the templates, but not necessarily that much more than setting up sources with fields, and it enables me to have precise control over how every element of the source and citation, as well as separators, are rendered (italics, parentheses, commas, semi-colons, etc.). I'm not sure if such an approach would be feasible with Strathclyde style, but it's served me well.

Peter Sherman ... thank you for your input. Yes, I think this has merit ... and is very possible if I have understood your description accurately. It seems to me, but I am but a novice here with REUNION, that I could take by example citations in the Strathclyde style, and post them into Source Templates I have created in the Source Settings (Shovel Screen), that reflect that Style like "

        or
        "Census records. England

Firstly, the ESM/EE approach is a wonderful piece of work and may be more appropriate in America. However, the approach as advised on the Masters of Genealogical studies course presented by the University of Strathclyde and presented by Dr Ian G. MacDonald in his book "Referencing for Genealogists, Sources and Citations" also IMHO has merit. It may be much more appropriate for those of us researching and working on sources in England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland.

I am going to take up your ideas and try and modify the template options as I believe that is why Leister has made this possible in Reunion. My concern is that I might have to be careful because I am not sure whether I can modify the templates "permanently" across all Reunion family files and imperviously access future releases of the software. This is because I will be removing all the source templates other than Free Form, and installing my own, with my own definitions of the fields for each template. Of course, this may all fail.

If anyone else has tried this, please let us know.

        Regards,

        John
