Espanso for Text Expansion

This came up on another site, so I thought I would also share here.

You can save yourself some typing in Reunion and other applications using a Text Expansion utility such as ESPANSO. For example, you type :c50 and it expands to 1850 U.S. Census. The website below explains it better and has better examples.

You can create a shortcut for practically anything. Espanso is Free Open Source Software (FOSS). If you really like it, consider an optional donation to the author.

I should add, this can be a little nerdy to install and configure. It's not for the very faint of heart, but with a little reading of the documentation, it's fairly straightforward.

The text replacement feature built into MacOS can also do this. I use it quite a bit for filling in frequently-used long sources and place names like "ohid" for "Ohio Death Records", "ssa" for "Social Security Applications and Claims Index", and "wor" for "Worth Township, Sanilac County, Michigan". If you're not familiar with it, click the Apple logo in the top left of the menu bar, then "System Settings...", "Keyboard", "Text Replacements".

I use one called atext which is really inexpensive and does this as well. It's also great for bits of code, for place names with diacritics, and so on. https://www.trankynam.com/atext/
